New IP Audio And Voice Functionality On APT WorldNet Oslo

30.08.2008

The WorldNet Oslo has enjoyed phenomenal success this year having been selected as the core audio networking platform by several high-profile public and commercial broadcasters throughout Europe, Asia and the US.

IBC 2008 sees the introduction of AES/EBU Synchronisation for audio over IP, Single Frequency Networking, support for SIP/SDP/ RTP and a new range of voice transport modules for the WorldNet Oslo platform. The impressive new feature list ensures that the system will meet the needs of all broadcasters, large and small, who wish to migrate from a synchronous-based architecture to IP audio networking.

The new AES/EBU Synchronization option was developed to overcome one of the key challenges for broadcasters interested in utilising audio over IP in large-scale networks: the lack of a stable reference clock. Adding an external AES/EBU synchronization input to the IP transport module enables the use of a common audio reference clock in all units on the IP network, ensuring the highest possible audio quality throughout the IP audio network.

With the addition of a GPS input, the platform can also enable broadcasters to create Single Frequency Networks over IP links with the precision of digital GPS timing.  This sophisticated solution enables highly accurate clock information to be distributed via a Global Positioning System (GPS) in conjunction with the WorldNet Oslo’s IP audio transport module. The SFN option on the WorldNet Oslo offers a cost-effective and extremely efficient solution to minimise FM bandwidth while avoiding the issues of synchronisation and phase matching associated with distributed transmitter sites.

IBC will see the official announcement of support for SIP/SDP/RTP throughout APT’s IP-based product range. This development ensures compliance with the IP compatibility standards laid down by the N/ACIP project within the EBU and enables interoperability with all compliant manufacturers’ IP audio codecs.

Finally, at IBC, APT will unveil a new series of plug-in voice modules which have been developed for the WorldNet Oslo platform. Now, broadcasters can combine both telephone and intercom traffic along with program audio and data for integrated, efficient networking over high-speed digital links. The range includes a wideband voice module offering four independent, fully duplex 7.5kz channels as well as 4-wire E&M and 2-wire FXO and FXS modules for the creation of Off-Premise extensions and PBX links.
